Archie C. Savage (born April 19, 1914 in Norfolk , Virginia , † February 4, 2003 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American dancer and actor .

Life

Savage grew up in Harlem. The colored, tall Savage got his first professional occupation as a dancer in the mid-1930s at "Hemsley Winfield's Dance Troupe" before he switched to Katherine Dunham and her Dance Troupe in 1939, where he and his partner shaped the Afro-Cuban dance form for years . In addition to dance engagements by this troupe, he has also appeared in five Broadway productions, including the first production of "South Pacific" in 1949 and in a handful of films.

At the age of about forty, Savage left the day-to-day business and turned to choreographing his own dance troupe and acting. For some time it stayed with a few supporting roles as an African tribal leader, whereupon Savage looked for a new field of activity in Europe in the late 1950s. He first settled in Germany and then for a long time in Italy, where he found work as an actor or choreographer for around twenty films; including as a dancer in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita , but also numerous adventure films and some science fiction productions by Antonio Margheriti .

At the age of sixty, Savage retired from active work and taught young professional colleagues in the United States.
