Consolea spinosissima is a species of plant in the genus Consolea from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet spinosissima means '(lat. Spinosissimus) very thorny'.

description

Consolea spinosissima grows upright, tree-shaped with a branched crown and reaches heights of up to 4.5 meters. The almost cylindrical trunk is heavily thorny. It reaches a height of up to 2.5 meters and a diameter of 8 centimeters. The elliptical to elongated, cloudy to light green, rather thick shoot sections are patterned like a network. They are 15 to 28 inches long and 5 to 9 inches wide. The glochids are brown. The one to three yellowish to white, needle-like thorns , which can sometimes be missing, are up to 8 centimeters long.

The initially orange-yellow flowers later turn reddish. They are 3 to 7.5 inches long and 1.2 to 2.5 inches in diameter. The yellow fruits are often flattened and have thorns. They reach a length of 2 to 6 centimeters and a diameter of 2 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Consolea spinosissima is endemic to Jamaica . The distribution area extends over three coastal locations in the south of the country.

The first description as Opuntia spinosissima was in 1768 by Philip Miller . Charles Lemaire placed them in the genus Consolea in 1862 . A synonym is Cactus spinosissimus (Mill.) Martyn (1871).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered. There are three different populations, the largest of which has around 200 specimens of the species. The number of species at this location remained constant between 2005 and 2007. The other two populations each contain 20 and 50 specimens of the species. No data are currently available on the future development of the populations .
