history

The history of the archive is closely linked to the eventful history of the former dioceses that today form the diocese of Lausanne-Geneva-Friborg. The Reformation led to the relocation of bishoprics: from Lausanne from 1615 to Freiburg; from Geneva to Annecy from 1568 . As a result of the ecclesiastical reorganization according to national principles, the diocese of Geneva was abolished in 1801 or its title was merged with the diocese of Lausanne in 1821, which in 1924 was elevated to the diocese of Lausanne-Geneva-Friborg with its seat in Friborg.

In 1814 and 1817 the Freiburg clergy bought two adjoining houses on Lausannegasse, which today serve as the bishopric and house the diocesan archive.

The building at Lausannegasse 86, formerly the Montenach house, today the seat of the bishop, is listed in the Swiss inventory of cultural property as a B object.

Stocks

The diocese archives keep numerous parchments, manuscripts, correspondence and historical documents that were created or received by the church, parishes or lay people. Among other things, the Manuale Venerabilis Capituli lausannensis (Manual of the venerable chapter of Lausanne) from 1405–1492 and the Missale ad usum Lausannensem (Missal of Lausanne), printed by Jean Belot in 1493.

The most important stocks are:

  • Diocese of Lausanne after its establishment in Friborg in 1610
  • Diocese of Geneva after its union with Lausanne in 1819
  • Diocese of Lausanne-Geneva-Friborg from 1924
  • The parishes since the 13th century
