Archytas is an impact crater on the Earth's moon . It overlaps the northern edge of the Mare Frigoris . To the northwest lies the comparably large Timaeus crater , while the smaller Protagoras crater lies in the opposite direction in the southeast. In the southwest, on the opposite edge of the lunar sea , you can see the crater Plato, which is striking due to its dark crater floor .
The crater rim of Archytas is sharp-edged and shows only minor traces of erosion from later impacts. The outer edge is almost circular and has a slight bulge only in the southeast. The interior of the crater is uneven and a wreath of material has deposited on the base of the inner walls. A pair of central peaks rise east of the center of the crater.
The lunar surface around the crater is relatively flat in the south due to the lava flows that have shaped the lunar sea. The terrain is more uneven in the north and northeast. The satellite crater Archytas B , located northwest of Archytas , forms a bay leveled by lava on the edge of the Mare Frigoris.
