Arembepe , officially Portuguese Subdistrito de Arembepe , is a former fishing village in the state of Bahia in Brazil, about 41 km north of the capital Salvador da Bahia . It is a subdistrict of Camaçari .

It is located directly on the busy and toll road Linha Verde ( Estrada do Coco ) and became very popular in Brazil thanks to the colonization by hippies in the 1970s. In the belief of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé , this place also plays an important role, because processions with boats in honor of the sea goddess Iemanjá or Yemayá take place from here .

The name Arembepe comes from the indigenous languages Tupí Guarani and means that which concerns us . Before it was founded around 150 years ago, Arembepe was a coconut palm plantation by the sea. Today Arembepe is a tourist place with its own infrastructure in terms of pensions and restaurants. On the long beach of Praia de Arembepe there are some beach bars that offer fish and fish dishes. In particular, weekend tourists from nearby Salvador da Bahia come, as there is a good bus connection to Arembepe via the Estrada do Coco on the BA-099 state road .
