The Arequipa Vesper mouse ( Calomys achaku ) is a little explored rodent of the genus Vesper mice ( Calomys ) in the family of agitators (Cricetidae). It was discovered in 2010 by Horacio Zeballos in the Colca Valley in the Andean region of Arequipa in southwestern Peru at an altitude of 3292 m and described scientifically in 2014. The kind of epithet achaku means mouse in the Aymara language.

The head-torso length is 65 to 99 mm, the tail length 59 to 80 mm, the ear length 14.1 to 21 mm, the rear foot length 14.6 to 20 mm and the weight 17 to 28 g. The Arequipa vesper mouse is a small species with a short tail that is about 83.4 percent of the length of the head and torso. The back is light gray to brownish-gray. In some specimens, the fur is mixed with orange hair. The belly is white.

Habitat and way of life

The Arequipa Vespermaus inhabits grasslands , scrubland, fields and plots of Polylepis forests in the high Andes. The vegetation is dominated by Stipa ichu , Festuca orthophylla and Parastrephia lepidophylla . The diet consists largely of insects. No further information is known about the way of life.
