Argaman (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Argaman is a particularly heat-resistant red wine variety suitable for dry climates , which comes from Israel and is mainly grown there. The vine received a silver medal at the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago in 1997 .

The wines of the Argaman grape have an intense berry aroma and a dark red-violet color. Accordingly, the name of the grape variety is derived from the Hebrew word argaman for a color term from ancient times, which was described as “red-blue to shimmering purple” becomes. The grape variety is a new breed between Carignan and the Portuguese grape variety Sousão (also called Suazzo grape). The crossing was carried out in 1972 by Professor Roy Spiegel in Israel.

According to the publication “Wines of Palestine” by the Wuppertal Wine Convention, the Argaman grape variety is the third most important red grape variety in Israel after Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot . It is mainly found in the growing areas around Tel El-Safi, Zichron Jakoov and Gedera.
