Arifin Mohamed Siregar (born February 11, 1934 in Medan , Sumatra Utara ; † September 23, 2019 ) was an Indonesian politician and diplomat who was, among other things, governor of Bank Indonesia between 1983 and 1988 , trade minister from 1988 to 1993 and between 1993 and 1997 Was ambassador to the USA and Grenada .

Life

After attending school in 1953, Siregar began studying at the Netherlands Business School in Rotterdam and graduated in 1956. In 1958 he began a study visit at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and between 1960 and 1961 worked as a research assistant at the institute for industrial research there. Subsequently, on February 24, 1960, he completed his doctorate there at the Faculty of Law and Political Science with the dissertation The Foreign Trade and Economic Development of Indonesia. An application of modern foreign trade theory to the case of Indonesia . He then moved to the United Nations Office for General Economic Research and Policy in New York City in 1961 as an economist and subsequently became Head of the UN Office for General Economic Research and Policy in Beirut , before becoming an economist in the Asia Department of the International in 1965 Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC .

Then Siregar was between 1969 and 1971 financial and economic advisor to the IMF in Laos and in 1971 became director of Bank Indonesia and 1973 alternate governor of the IMF for Indonesia. On March 29, 1983, he dissolved Rachmat Saleh as governor of Bank Indonesia and held this office until March 19, 1988, whereupon Adrianus Mooy succeeded him. At the same time he was appointed alternate governor of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for Indonesia in 1983 . On March 23, 1988 he took over the post of Minister of Commerce (Menteri Perdagangan) in the fifth government (Kebinet Pembangunan V) from President Suharto , where he was again successor to Rachmat Saleh. He held the ministerial post until March 17, 1993 and was then replaced by Satrio Budihardjo Joedono . Most recently, in August 1993, he replaced Abdul Rahman Ramly as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the USA and Grenada and remained in this post before Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti succeeded him there in February 1998 .
