Aria Eliav (2008)

Arje "Lowa" Eliav ( Hebrew אריה לוֹבָה אליאב; * November 21, 1921 in Moscow ; † May 30, 2010 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli politician and sat in the Knesset from 1965 to 1979 and from 1988 to 1992 .

In 1924 Arie Eliav emigrated with his family to the British Mandate of Palestine . He joined the Haganah in 1936 and stayed there until 1940 when he joined the British Army, where he served in an artillery unit. In 1945 he returned to the mandate area and was active in the Aliyah Bet movement until 1948 .

He studied history and sociology at the Hebrew University . After receiving his Bachelor of Arts there, he began to work as a teacher and sociologist. In 1958 Eliav was sent to Moscow to become first secretary at the Israeli embassy. He held this post until 1960.

In 1965 Eliav was first elected to the Knesset. There he became first deputy minister of industry and trade and later deputy minister for immigration and integration. In the 1969 elections he was able to defend his mandate.

Eliav was now General Secretary of Avoda , which he remained until 1971. After his re-election to the Knesset in 1973, he resigned from the party. Eliav belonged to the Knesset first as an independent and then joined the newly founded party Ya'ad - Tenoa'a LaZkhuyot HaEzrah . When the party disbanded in 1976, he founded the Social Democratic Faction in January 1976 with Marcia Freedman . In February the party renamed itself the Independent Socialist Faction .

In the 1977 Knesset elections, Eliav stood for the Left Camp of Israel ( Mehaney Smol LeYisrael ; or Scheli as an acronym for Shalom LeYisrael - Peace for Israel ), a party that had recently emerged from the union of the Independent Socialist Faction with other small parties . The party won two seats. A rotation agreement now provided for the seats to be divided between five MPs. Accordingly, Eliav stepped down in January 1979 to make way for Uri Avnery .

In 1984 Eliav tried unsuccessfully to be re-elected to the Knesset. In 1987 he returned to Avoda. In the same year he headed the Jewish Agency project that he initiated , which envisaged the establishment of Nitzana , a community in the Negev desert. Until 2008 he held the office of the community council. In 1988 Eliav was re-elected to the Knesset. He did not run in the 1992 elections.

Honors

Eliav received the Israel Prize in 1988 in recognition of his services to Israeli society and the State of Israel. In 2003 he received the Ben Gurion Prize .
