Norman Del Mar

Norman René Del Mar (born July 31, 1919 in London , † February 6, 1994 in Bushey , Hertfordshire ) was a British conductor and music writer.

Del Mar studied composition with Constant Lambert and Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music . From 1947 to 1951 he assisted Thomas Beecham at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , which he initially joined as a horn player. From 1951 to 1954 he directed the London Philharmonic Orchestra and from 1954 to 1955 the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra . He also directed the English Opera Group and taught at the Guildhall School of Music until 1957 . From 1960 to 1965 he conducted the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and subsequently numerous other British orchestras. From 1972 to 1990 he was professor of conducting at the Royal College of Music. 1974 to 1977 he also worked at the Royal Academy of Music , was Principal Conductor of the Academy of BBC from 1974 to 1977 , Principal Guest Conductor of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta from 1983 to 1985 and from 1985 to 1988 Del Mar headed the Danish Aarhus Symfoniorkester .

The focus of his work as a conductor, which document around 70 recordings, was on works from the late Romantic period, for example by Edward Elgar and other British composers, Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss . A Del Mars private collection of about 5,000 copies of historic 78s records is located in the Hartley Library at the University of Southampton .

His son is the musicologist and conductor Jonathan Del Mar .
