Jonathan Del Mar

Jonathan Del Mar (born January 7, 1951 in London ) is an English conductor and musicologist .

Life

Del Mar, son of the conductor Norman Del Mar , received a music scholarship to Christ Church in Oxford at the age of 17. After studying at the Royal College of Music in London, where he conducted symphony and chamber orchestras, he was invited by Franco Ferrari to take part in the International Conducting Course in Venice . There he gave various concerts with the Orchestra del Teatro la Fenice . He began his professional career with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. In 1984 he made his first appearance with the London Symphony Orchestra and has since worked with almost all major orchestras in England. He is equally familiar with classical and contemporary music, which is reflected in his programming.

Del Mar gained international fame with his critical new edition of Beethoven's nine symphonies , which was published by Bärenreiter-Verlag . His research began in 1985 and ended in 1997 with the appearance of the Ninth Symphony. Numerous well-known conductors use Del Mars Edition, including Claudio Abbado , Bernard Haitink , Sir Simon Rattle and David Zinman .
