The Arlau class is a series of environmentally friendly car ferries on the Kiel Canal that will enter service from 2021 . It is intended to gradually replace the ferries from the 1950s and 1960s.

General

The order for the first three newbuildings was awarded by the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping to Baltic Workboats AS in Nasva , Estonia in November 2018 . The christening of this first batch took place, a year later than originally planned, on October 29, 2021 in Hochdonn . The ferries are operated by the Kiel Canal and Shipping Authority .

description

The ferries are equipped with an integrated electric drive , in which the batteries are initially charged by an emissions-standardized marine diesel engine . In the coming years, charging through a shore power connection should be possible. A further reduction in pollution is achieved in that the ferries are held at the ferry docks with a new locking system and the drive can be switched off during loading and unloading.

The ferries are 30 m long and 9.60 m wide. With two lanes each 24 m long and 2.85 m wide, the load capacity is 45 tdw ( loading tons) . There is a 17 m long covered lounge area for pedestrians and cyclists.

units

The first three ferries are named after rivers in Schleswig-Holstein .
