particularities | Oldest beech population in Germany |
The Kleinengelein natural forest is an approx. 53 hectare forest reserve in the Steigerwald . The protected area is located in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt . It is one of the most valuable protected areas in Germany.
Geographical location
The forest reserve is located on the western flank of the Steigerwald, between the places Rauhenebrach and Michelau in the Steigerwald in the district of Schweinfurt. Kleinengelein is located in the southern part of the Wustvieler forest . To the north of the area lies the newly created Knetzberge-Böhlgrund natural forest . To the east lies the ecologically valuable nature reserve Weilersbachtal . The natural forest reserve lies entirely in the FFH area beech forests and meadow valleys of the Nordsteigerwald .
History and protection status
The forest area was mentioned as early as 1023 when it was owned by the Würzburg Monastery. Until the 16th century, the forest area was cultivated non-ecologically and in some cases also plundered. Since the bishopric issued a forest regulation in the 17th century, a middle forest rich in Oberholz was created in Kleinengelein . The oak stocks were then used as construction timber, while the beech trees were less popular back then, so they were allowed to stand and have been preserved to this day. In 2010 the area was designated as a natural forest reserve after increasingly louder demands for more protection for the little angel. Apart from necessary measures of forest protection and traffic safety, there is no management and no logging in natural forest reserves and natural forests.
Reasons for protection
Forest
In the Kleinengelein is probably the oldest beech population in Germany. Individual trees date from the Thirty Years' War , many more from the 18th century. The thinner side stands are mostly between 50 and 100 years old. Many strong bookings were mapped and recorded in a list.

The Kleinengelein is the only beech population in Germany where you can encounter dwarf , collar , pied and gray flycatchers together.
National park and UNESCO world natural heritage
The area is at the center of the conflict that has been going on for years over the possible establishment of a national park in the northern Steigerwald. For a possible world natural heritage, the NWR would have to be integrated into a large conservation area. Local nature conservation associations are therefore calling for Kleinengelein and the Weilersbachtal to be integrated into the northeastern Knetzberge-Böhlgrund natural forest in order to achieve the minimum size of 1000 hectares required for a world natural heritage site.
