history

The protected area was placed under protection by the authorities on 1995.

Geography and geology

The protected area 93 hectares the northern part of the Weilersbachtal with wooded peripheral areas. It lies between the Hohenberg and the Steinberg in the east and the Wustvieler forest in the west. The Weilersbachtal is a typical meadow valley of the Steigerwald . The area includes areas of the municipality of Rauhenebrach as well as parts of the municipality-free areas of Wustvieler Forst in the district of Schweinfurt and Fabrikschleichacher Forst in the district of Haßberge.

Areas of the nature reserve are parts of the FFH area "beech forests and meadow valleys of the Nordsteigerwald" and the European bird sanctuary "Oberer Steigerwald". A few hundred meters from the border of the nature reserve, on the upper reaches of the Weilersbach, lies the Wotansborn spring , which has been a natural monument since 1912 .

Another special feature of the nature reserve is the 53 hectare Kleinengelein natural forest reserve in the Wustvieler Forst , a former school forest area with old beech trees, which is one of the highest and oldest beech forests in Germany. The beeches, which are around 200 years old, but occasionally up to 400 years old, are known as "Giant Beeches of Kleinengelein".

A number of hiking trails lead through the nature reserve, noteworthy is the "Biodiversity Path" implemented by the municipality of Rauhenebrach together with BaySF and the Office for Agriculture as an adventure trail, which leads as a circular route of around 6 kilometers from Obersteinbach through the nature reserve . The Knetzberge-Böhlgrund natural forest lies north of the nature reserve .

Flora and fauna

The area consists of meadow communities with tall herbaceous vegetation , spring areas and natural streams with typical alder and ash alluvial forests .
