The Spitalgrund-Oberes Volkachtal nature reserve is a nature reserve in the Schweinfurt district . It is mainly located in the municipality of Michelau in the Steigerwald and partly in the municipality-free area Hundelshausen .

history

The protected area was placed under protection by the authorities on 1985. The basis of the area was the area in the Spitalgrund near Prüßberg, which was purchased by the Federal Nature Conservation Association with the support of Bernhard Grzimek , who was living nearby in Donnersdorf at the time, and the Frankfurt Zoological Society at the end of the 1970s. Grzimek had already acquired the first areas of today's nature reserve in 1975 and later transferred it to the then newly founded Bund Naturschutz.

Geology and geography

The elongated area follows the upper reaches of the Volkach to the so-called Spitalgrund northeast of the village of Prüßberg . The upper reaches of the Volkach are called Spitalbach and Aubach above Michelau in the Steigerwald and are fed by the smaller streams Mühlbach, Holzbach and Grundbach. The area includes meadows and alluvial forests on both sides of the streams as well as steep ravine forests . The forest is an oak-hornbeam forest with typical secondary tree species such as bird cherry, winter linden, mountain elm and service tree.

Flora and fauna

The watercourses in the area are home to Mühlkoppen and brook lamprey, and there are river crabs and stone crabs in backwaters . The wetlands are home to amphibians , including the fire salamander . Inhabitants of the sloping ravine forests in Spitalgrund include the middle spotted woodpecker , great spotted woodpecker , small woodpecker , green woodpecker , gray woodpecker and black woodpecker , whose caves are used by stock pigeons , dormice , bats and hornets . On the slopes and streams you can find wild garlic , Turk's union , celandine , lark's spur and forest violets . Ash and black alder grow on the banks of the stream .
