The nature reserve extension of the Garstadt bird sanctuary is a protected area near Heidenfeld , municipality of Röthlein and Garstadt , municipality of Bergrheinfeld in the district of Schweinfurt .
history
The area was placed under protection in 2001. It borders on the Garstadt bird sanctuary, which is also a nature reserve, and includes the Garstadt lakes , six larger and a number of smaller ponds and their bank areas.
Flora and fauna
The nature reserve was previously used as a sand and gravel mining area. This created a lake district with wetlands, alluvial forests , meadows and reed areas , which offers plenty of space for the bird world. So far (as of 2013) more than 270 bird species have been sighted. Breeding birds in the area include partridge , little bittern , purple heron , turncoat , gray-headed woodpecker , middle spotted woodpecker , warbler , collared flycatcher , nightingale and Bluethroat .
