Garstadt (East Franconian Gorscht ) is a district of the municipality Bergrheinfeld in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt .

Geographical location

Garstadt is located in the extreme south of the Bergrheinfeld municipal area on the Main . Garstadt is connected to the main town of the municipality via state road 2270, which runs in a northerly direction. To the southeast, the towers of the decommissioned Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant rise on the other side of the Main, the community of the same name is some distance away. To the east is Heidenfeld , a district of Röthlein . Waigolshausen - Hergolshausen , Werneck - Ettleben is to the west on the same side of the Main .

The Garstadt bird sanctuary , an extensive nature reserve, can be found in the district of Garstadt . Its area was significantly expanded in 2001 ( expansion of the Garstadt bird sanctuary ). In addition, the Garstadter Holz conservation area can be found near the village.

history

The area around Garstadt has been permanently inhabited at least at times since the Paleolithic , in particular because of the fertile soils, the river and the many lakes. However, the village only becomes documented for the first time in 1094. At that time, the Counts Bodo and Judith of Carinthia handed over their possessions to the Theres monastery near Haßfurt. “Garnestadt” was also among the goods. The place name can probably be derived from a certain Garwin who resided here in Franconian times.

Throughout the rest of the Middle Ages , the rulership of the village over Garstadt remained fragmented. Above all monasteries in the area could assert possessions and rights. The Cistercians from Ebrach , the Cistercians from Mariaburghausen and Heiligenthal , the Benedictines from Theres and the canons from neighboring Heidenfeld should be mentioned here . At the same time, Frankish knight families, such as the lords of "Spechtshard" and the "Steinau", hold possessions.

There was also a castle in Garstadt during the Middle Ages , of which no remains are visible today. The fortified manor house is, however, secured by remains underground. By the end of the Old Kingdom, the Würzburg prince-bishop succeeded in becoming the landlord of Garstadt, he was also the bearer of lower and higher jurisdiction. With the secularization Garstadt became Bavarian and part of the district court of Werneck . On July 1, 1971, the municipal reform ended the centuries-long independence of the village.

Attractions

The Church of St. Michael in front of the cemetery

Today the center of the village is the Catholic parish church of St. Michael. It stands on a hill above the village, where the fortified medieval courtyard was to be found. The church was built in 1694 and is in the style of the Würzburg master builder Antonio Petrini . The portal of the church is crowned by a coat of arms of the Würzburg bishop Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg . Inside there are several altars from the time it was built; the pulpit dates from around 1700.

The “Zum Schiff” inn is also particularly noteworthy. It was built in the 17th century and decorated with a stepped gable . In addition, several wayside shrines and small memorials have been preserved in and around Garstadt , which are typical of Catholic villages in Franconia . Most of these monuments were erected in the 18th century. So in 1756 a large Immaculate was created on the globe, which can be found today, in color, at Dorfstraße 47.

In the 1990s, the community built a small chapel in an abandoned quarry. It is consecrated to the Holy Family. Viticulture is still practiced around Garstadt today; wine has been recorded in the village since 1248.
