particularities Mixed beech forest

The natural forest is an approx. 850 hectare forest reserve in the northern Steigerwald . It is located in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge , south of the town of Zell am Ebersberg . It connects the two natural forest reserves Böhlgrund and Mordgrund. The area was designated as a protected area in 2020. The protected area is one of the largest in Bavaria.

Geographical location

The nature reserve is located on the northeastern slope of the Steigerwald. It comprises a large part of the course of the Stöckigsbach , which flows northeast into the Main . The natural forest lies between the towns of Zell am Ebersberg, Eschenau, Fabrikschleichach , Oberschleichach , Neuschleichach and includes several forest areas. The area lies entirely in the FFH area "Beech forests and meadow valleys of the Nordsteigerwald". To the south, the nature reserve Weilersbachtal borders the natural forest.

Protection status and history

Apart from necessary measures of forest protection and traffic safety, there is no management and no timber harvesting in natural forest reserves and natural forests. As part of the referendum for biodiversity “ Save the bees 2019”, the Bavarian state government announced that it would designate a 1000 hectare protected area in the Steigerwald. The decision was made in favor of the Böhlgrund for economic reasons, as it is difficult or hardly usable in terms of forestry. The major project was implemented in June 2020.

Critics and supporters

Various nature conservation associations such. B. the Bund Naturschutz or the local national park-friendly associations welcomed the designation of the protected area in the northern Steigerwald, as this area could be easily integrated into a national park. Opponents of the natural forest see it as a compromise in the national park discussions that have been going on for years around the northern Steigerwald. The forest enterprise Ebrach still prefers the implementation of stepping stone areas, which are max. extend over 20 hectares and are already distributed all over Bavaria.

National Park and UNESCO World Heritage

According to various media reports, the Knetzberge-Böhlgrund natural forest is not suitable for a beech forest World Heritage Site, as it is a 100-200 year old mixed beech forest. Many nature conservation associations are therefore immediately demanding that the Hohe Buchener Wald near Ebrach , which was already a nature reserve, be designated as one again in order to realize a world natural heritage in the Steigerwald. The area of the natural forest could be integrated into a possible Steigerwald National Park.
