Johann Ulrich Gottlieb Schäffer , from 1824 Ritter von Schäffer (also Gottlob ; born September 20, 1753 in Regensburg , † August 14, 1829 there ), was a German doctor .

Life

Schäffer attended the Protestant grammar school in Regensburg and at the same time already heard the first medical lectures from his father Johann Gottlieb Schaeffer . In 1773 he went to the University of Erlangen , where he also studied philosophy and medicine like his father . With the dissertation fetus cum matre by nervous commercium he was there then in 1775 to Dr. med. PhD . This was followed by a study trip to Strasbourg University , where his brother Jacob Christian Gottlieb von Schäffer had previously been trained as a doctor, and to Switzerland .

Schäffer returned to Regensburg in October 1776. He settled there as a general practitioner and was active in training midwives . In 1777 he became the Hofmedicus at the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein , 1778 then the personal physician and Councilor also and their Landphysicus appointed . In 1786 he moved to the Counts of Oettingen-Baldern as personal physician, rural physician and councilor . However, he wanted to go back to his hometown and was given permission to do so in 1787, but should be available to the counts as a medic at any time.

Schäffer resettled himself as a general practitioner in Regensburg in 1788 and was not only very popular with the city's population. The dignitaries who stayed in the city because of the Perpetual Reichstag also regularly sought advice from him. He also accompanied various people on their travels. In 1804 he was appointed medical councilor in Regensburg , and in 1806 he was made a privy councilor . In 1815 he was called to Straubing to fight the typhus epidemic there.

Schäffer was a member of various academies and societies, such as the Physikalisch-Medicinischen Societät zu Erlangen , the Institute of Morals and Fine Sciences and the Medicinisch-Surgical Society in Berlin . In 1824 he received the Civil Merit Order of the Bavarian Crown and was thus elevated to the personal nobility .
