Johann Gottlieb Schaeffer also Schäffer (born September 13, 1720 in Querfurt , † February 1, 1795 in Regensburg ) was a German doctor .

Life

Schaeffer, son of the archdeacon Johann Christoph Schäffer, grew up in poor circumstances with five siblings after his father's early death in 1728. For financial reasons, a degree was not initially planned. Therefore he went to Schmölln in 1734 to become a pharmacist . In 1741 he came to the Elephant Pharmacy in Regensburg. His brother Jacob Christian Schäffer was superintendent there and was to support him in his further training in the following years. Schaeffer learned the ancient languages ​​in Regensburg while working as a pharmacist and then went to nearby Neustadt an der Aisch, where he was finally prepared for studies at the Lyceum .

Schaeffer was able to start studying medicine at the University of Altdorf on January 13, 1744 , with the support of his brother. He also devoted himself to studying philosophy . Already on 23 November 1745, the well preformed Schaeffer gained with the dissertation De caussis, cur alimenta et medicamenta alium saepe effectum edant in hominibus quam medics aegrotis the promotion of Dr. med. and on January 17, 1747 he was finally awarded the Dr. phil. awarded.

Schaeffer was already licensed as a general practitioner in Regensburg from 1747 and took over the management of the city's Catholic hospital in 1749. In 1763 he introduced the vaccination against peeling in Regensburg, held medical lectures for the training of surgeons , but also for citizens who were also interested. He became the personal physician of the princes of Thurn and Taxis and of the prince-bishop of Regensburg . On November 18, 1774 he became a garrison physician , on August 17, 1775 second city ​​physician and finally in 1788 first city physician.

He received multiple recognition for his work. He was elected a member of the Leopoldina Academy of Natural Sciences in 1757 , and then a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1759, the year it was founded . In 1790 he finally received the dignity of court councilor from the Prince-Bishop of Regensburg .

The Regensburg doctors Johann Ulrich Gottlieb von Schäffer (1753–1829) and Jacob Christian Gottlieb von Schäffer (1752–1826) were his sons.
