history

The Armée de Lorraine emerged on August 22, 1914 by order of the Grand Quartier Général on August 19 from a sub-grouping of the French 3rd Army , which had been formed on August 17. Their task was to shield the right flank of the 3rd Army against the fortress of Metz , for which purpose it was deployed in the area of the Meuse Heights between Pont-à-Mousson and Chambley - Étain . Their commander was General Paul Durand , who was also the leader of the 3rd Reserve Division Group of three divisions and had two other divisions and the fortresses of Toul and Verdun under his command. With the formation of the Armée de Lorraine , the reactivated General Joseph Maunoury assumed command on August 21 .

Maunoury's task was to shield the right rear flank of the 3rd Army's advance into southern Belgian Luxembourg that led into the battle of Longwy . The Armée de Lorraine was involved in this multi-day battle against the German 5th Army from August 24th. Maunoury's army first reached the Orne (tributary of the Moselle ), before they had to withdraw from German counter-attacks on the Meuse heights and into the valley of the Meuse by August 27 . After the unfavorable course of the border battles , the headquarters in Verdun was disbanded on August 27 and used to raise the 6th Army in the area north of Paris . For the upcoming Battle of the Marne , a total of four divisions were transferred to this army, which was still commanded by General Maunoury. The 3rd Reserve Division Group meanwhile withdrew further on Verdun.
