The death of the Chevalier de Belle-Isle

Louis-Charles-Armand Fouquet, comte de Belle-Isle , called Chevalier de Belle-Isle , (born September 19, 1693 in Agde , † July 19, 1747 at Colle dell'Assietta , Piedmont ) was a French officer and diplomat. He was the commander-in-chief of the French troops in the battle of the Assietta , in the course of which he fell.

He was the younger brother of Louis-Charles-Auguste Fouquet de Belle-Isles and accompanied him on almost all campaigns of the Polish and Austrian War of Succession , 1744-1745 also in captivity in England. Returned from there, he was in command of the French armed forces that tried in vain to invade the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont in 1747 . Belle-Isle ordered and personally led a senseless and loss-making attack on the fortified pass over the Assietta Heights near Exilles , which was defended by nine Piedmontese and four Austrian battalions , on July 19 , in which he and around 3700 French soldiers were killed. Another 1,600 soldiers were seriously wounded. The defense lawyers, on the other hand, had 299 dead and wounded to mourn.
