Armando Rodríguez Ruidíaz (* 1951 in Havana , Cuba ) is a Cuban composer, guitarist, bagpiper and university teacher.

Academic background

Armando Rodríguez Ruidíaz studied composition with José Ardévol and Roberto Valera at the National School of Arts and the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. He also studied classical guitar with Marta Cuervo and Isaac Nicola at the National School of Arts.

In the 2000s, Rodríguez explored the sonic possibilities of the Galician bagpipes .

Rodríguez's music was played by numerous artists and ensembles in his native Cuba, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and the National Ballet.

In 1985 Rodríguez emigrated to the USA. Since then, his compositions have been featured by renowned artists and ensembles such as the Relâche Ensemble Philadelphia, the saxophonist Miguel Villafruela, the double bass player Luis Gómez-Imbert, the pianists Roberto Urbay, Max Lifchitz and Beatriz Balzi as well as the guitarists Flores Chaviano and Carlos Molina at events like the Bang on a Can Festival in New York City, Las Primeras Jornadas de Música Contemporánea de Sevilla in Spain, the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil, the Latin American and Caribbean Music Forum, and the Subtropics Festival in Miami, Florida.

He worked with the visual artist Kate Rawlinson and with the composer Gustavo Matamoros. With the latter he co-founded the PUNTO Experimental Music Ensemble.

His work has been published by EGREM and C. Alan Publications and has aired in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America.

Teaching

After graduating in 1972, Rodríguez taught guitar at the Esteban Salas Conservatory in Santiago de Cuba. In 1975 he was appointed professor of guitar and music theory at the National Art School in Havana, where he taught until 1980.

Bagpiper

Armando Rodríguez carried out extensive research on Galician and Asturian music and their points of contact with Cuban music. The results of these studies have been published in articles such as: “Presencia de la Gaita en Cuba”. Rodríguez also examined the history of the bagpipe and its playing technique.
