Missodia Sionia (" Zionic Mass Chant ") is the title of a collection of sacred music by Michael Praetorius . He published the work, which contains 104 pieces in Latin for use in worship, in 1611 in Wolfenbüttel . The pieces are for two to eight voices set . The collection contains an eight-part mass .

history

Praetorius published his compositions in 20 volumes during his lifetime. While one volume, Terpsichore , contains secular French dances, the others are devoted to sacred music based on German and Latin texts. The reformers had by no means abandoned the use of the Latin liturgy.

Missodia Sionia is the title of Volume 11, which appeared in Wolfenbüttel in 1611 . The content is described on the title page: Missodia Sionia / Continens / Cantiones sacras, ad Officium quod vocant Summum ("Zionic mass chant / containing / sacred chants for the so-called high mass"), in particular Kyrie, Gloria, Et in terra, and many others, for two to eight voices. The title page also contains a note that the Gregorian chant part has been retained unchanged ( Chorali cumprimis observata ).

The parts of the mass are set for different occasions of the church year, and in different degrees of difficulty. The first 15 pieces are in four parts: 10 movements from Kyrie and 5 movements from Gloria. The second group of 21 pieces is set up for four- to six-part choir: 14 Kyrie and 7 Gloria. Another group (50 to 77) contains different movements about the Lord's Supper: Praefatio, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, as well as a complete eight-part mass. Pieces 80 to 93 are 14 different Amen compositions in different keys. The last pieces in the collection, 94 to 104, consist of 10 movements of the Gloria and an introit.

One copy of the collection is in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. A new edition of the collection was edited by Friedrich Blume in 1934 and published by Georg Kallmeyer Verlag.

Excerpts from the collection were recorded in 2011, 400 years after their first publication, by the Ensemble Weser Renaissance, directed by Manfred Cordes . Under the title Easter Mass , the musicians reconstructed how the music in the church service might have sounded at the time of Praetorius.
