Armatocereus brevispinus is a species of plant in the genus Armatocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet brevispinus is derived from the Latin words brevis for 'short' and -spinus for '-thorn'.

description

Armatocereus brevispinus grows tree-shaped, is richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 10 meters. A clear trunk up to 2 meters high with a diameter of 50 centimeters is formed. The spreading, gray-green shoots appear grayish. They are divided into 40 to 80 centimeter long segments with a diameter of 7 to 12 centimeters, which are tapered at both ends. There are four to six ribs separated by deep incisions that are 2 to 4 centimeters high. The six to nine inconspicuous, spread out. light brown thorns turn gray with age. They have a length of 2 to 7 millimeters.

The narrow, funnel-shaped, white flowers protrude horizontally from the shoot. They are 8 centimeters and reach a diameter of 6 centimeters. The green fruits are egg-shaped and 7 to 10 centimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

Armatocereus brevispinus is distributed in Ecuador in the Loja province from Catamayo to Loja at altitudes of 1700 to 2000 meters.

The first description by Jens E. Madsen was published in 1989. A nomenclature synonym is Armatocereus godingianus subsp. brevispinus (Madsen) DRHunt (2002).
