Armatocereus rauhii is a species of plant in the genus Armatocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet rauhii honors the German botanist Werner Rauh .

description

Armatocereus rauhii grows tree-shaped, is only sparsely branched and reaches heights of 4 to 10 meters. A clear trunk with a height of up to 1 meter is formed. The stiff, upright, bluish to gray-green shoots are divided into conspicuous segments with a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. There are eight to 13 ribs with small areoles on them . The one to three central spines , which can occasionally be missing, are gray and have a darker tip. They have a length of 0.6 to 3 centimeters. The six to twelve whitish radial spines are 1 to 3 millimeters long.

The carmine-red flowers are up to 4 centimeters in diameter. The spherical fruits are dark green. They are 3 to 5 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Armatocereus rauhii is common in the Peruvian regions of Cajamarca and Ancash .

It was first described in 1957 by Curt Backeberg . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Armatocereus rauhii subsp. rauhii
  • Armatocereus rauhii subsp. balsasensis (F.Ritter) Ostolaza

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The subspecies were not recorded separately.
