Army Division Hollidt

The Hollidt Army Department was a major unit of the Wehrmacht that existed for only a few months and was used in the fighting in the Donbogen and Donets in the winter of 1942/43 .

The association was on January 23, 1943 from the General Command of the XVII. Army corps formed. The army division was subordinate to Army Group Don and Army Group South . Namesake and commander was General of the Infantry Karl-Adolf Hollidt .

After inclusion of the German 6th Army in Stalingrad Soviet formations tried in early December 1942 on the lower Don and Chir repressed German defensive front in the direction of Rostov-on-Don to pierce and so the German troops in the Caucasus cut off the retreat. In order to prevent this, units that were already considerably weakened were hastily restructured.

On the river Tschir, the Hollidt Army Detachment was created from so-called alarm units and thrown combat groups, including rear units of the 6th Army, which did not get into the Stalingrad pocket. The 306th Infantry Division should also be used to strengthen them.

After the retreat to the Mius , the army division was renamed the 6th Army on March 6, 1943.
