The Army Group Don was a major unit of the Army of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War . She was high command of changing armies and numerous special troops.

history

Army Group Don was formed on November 21, 1942 from parts of Army Group B in the area of the Don Arch and around Stalingrad . These were the 6th Army , which was included in Stalingrad , the 4th Panzer Army (including the Romanian 4th Army , which was subordinate to it ) in the Kotelnikowo area . Army division formed by the Hollidt Army Corps and the Romanian 3rd Army . The Army Group Command was formed from Army High Command 11 under General Field Marshal Erich von Manstein . The task of the Army Group was to bring the Russian attacks ( Operation Uranus ) to a standstill and to regain the positions previously held.

The Army Group initially tried to relieve the 6th Army by a relief attack by the 4th Panzer Army from the Kotelnikowo area on the siege ring (→ Operation Wintergewitter ). However, after Hitler forbade the 6th Army to break out of Stalingrad and the entire southern wing of the Eastern Front wavered after the Red Army breached the Italian 8th Army , the attempt at relief had to be abandoned at Christmas 1942. At the end of January / beginning of February the remnants of the 6th Army surrendered.

The 1st Panzer Army , withdrawn from the Caucasus , was placed under the Don Army Group in January 1943 and relocated to Eastern Ukraine. Together with the 4th Panzer Army and the Army detachments Hollidt and Lanz, and later Kempf, the front was largely stabilized in February.

On February 12, 1943, Army Group Don was merged with the disbanded Army Group B and renamed Army Group South .
