Army Group Ostmark

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Army Group Ostmark was a major unit of the Army of the Wehrmacht during the Second World War . It was high command of alternating armies as well as numerous special troops and emerged from the Army Group South .

General

The Army Group Ostmark was created by renaming the Army Group South in April 1945. After the HGr Süd was defeated in Hungary and had withdrawn to Austria, the Austrian Colonel General Lothar Rendulic took over command.

The last headquarters of Rendulic was in Rothschildschloss Waidhofen an der Ybbs , where on May 6, 1945, Rendulic agreed the terms of the armistice with American negotiators, which was signed on May 7 in Steyr with the Commander in Chief of the Third American Army. The next day, Rendulic left the castle for good and went with his staff into American captivity .

Notes on the section

Commander in chief

When Colonel-General Rendulic was actually Commander-in-Chief is stated differently in the various sources. April 7th, April 2nd or later is stated in the sources. What is certain, however, is that the Army Group was disbanded on May 8 with the surrender of Germany.

Note: The 6th Panzer Army is to be equated with the 6th SS Panzer Army under Oberstgruppenführer Josef Dietrich . This unit was formed on September 6, 1944 and deployed on the Western Front (Battle of the Bulge) and then as part of the HGr Süd / Ostmark also in Hungary and Austria.

Remarks

  1. Regarding the following information, it should be said that there are many different and contradicting statements in the literature, especially with regard to the assigned units and data. This is not least due to the chaotic conditions towards the end of the war. The Federal Archives of the Army Group only have files up to March 1945, so that the Army Group is no longer documented at all after it was renamed from "Süd" to "Ostmark". This in turn is probably due to the fact that the German associations - not only the HGr Ostmark - normally destroyed their files when they surrendered.
