Army Group Africa

The Army Group Africa was a major unit of the army of the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War . It was high command of two armies and other subordinate troops and existed only briefly during the fighting for Tunisia in 1943.

Career

The Army Group Africa was from the on 23 February 1943 the High Command of the German-Italian Panzer Army and the organization rod Tunisia set out. It was subordinate to the Commander-in-Chief South and consisted of the Italian 1st Army and the German 5th Panzer Army . Commander-in-chief was initially General Field Marshal Erwin Rommel for a short time , but he was then called back home and replaced by Colonel General Hans-Jürgen von Arnim . The Commander-in-Chief South was under Italian command at the time.

From May 9 to May 13, 1943, the individual units of the Army Group capitulated. The Italian 1st Army was the last major unit to capitulate. A total surrender did not take place, Arnim only surrendered himself personally with his management staff (similar to Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus had already done in Stalingrad ) in captivity.
