Initially still committed to the representational and emerged as an accomplished draftsman, his work changed in the 1970s to constructive and geometrical forms, as pen drawings show. But the figure and the landscape continued to form the starting point for his own artistic implementation of acrylic paintings and collages, which mostly grow outward from a center. In doing so, Kalbhenn fused the materials with the color, which he balanced and gave it materiality through pastose and multi-layered application.
His works have been shown in over 200 solo exhibitions; he also took part in numerous other exhibitions at home and abroad. His works are in private and public ownership, u. a. in the collections of the regional councils in Stuttgart , Freiburg im Breisgau and Tübingen .
