The Armenian Academy of Sciences ( Armenian Հայաստանի Հանրապետության գիտությունների ազգային ակադեմիա ) is the main body of the Republic of Armenia that conducts research and coordinates activities in the fields of natural and social sciences. It also serves as the national language society for the Armenian language .
It was founded on November 29, 1943 in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic ( Eastern Armenia ) as a branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences . The central branch of the Academy of Sciences is located in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan , although other branches also exist in Gyumri , Sevan , Goris , Vanadzor and Ghapan .
The Science Academy was founded by several Armenian intellectuals, including Joseph Orbeli , Stepan Malkhasyants , Avetik Issahakjan , Ivan Gevorkian and Viktor Amazaspovich Ambartsumian ; Orbeli became the Academy's first president.
From 1947 to 1993 the President of the Academy of Sciences was Professor Ambartsumyan, a full member of the Armenian and Soviet Academies of Sciences. From 1993 to 2006, the President of the Academy of Academics was Fadey Sargsian. Since 2006 it has been the academic Radik Martirosyan.
The branch in Aragazotn conducts research on astronomy at the Byurakan Observatory . A well-known member of the academy is the western Armenian Frenchman Raymond Haroutioun Kévorkian , a researcher on the genocide of the Armenians .
