Arnfast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arnfast was an abbot of the Ryd monastery in the Duchy of Schleswig in the 13th century .

Life

After the death of Bishop Peder IV there was a bitter dispute over the election of the bishop. After all canonical electoral methods had been unsuccessfully applied, Archbishop Jakob Erlandsen consecrated Abbot Arnfast as Bishop of Arhus . In the end, six members of the chapter had voted for him and six for Magister Tyge. However, his choice was rejected by Margarete , as he was suspected of the murder of King Christopher I of Denmark. Marshal Johannes Kalv therefore looked for him and was several times at the Øm monastery , where he declared that he wanted to seize and arrest Arnfast. The chronicle states that he was not in Øm, although he must have arrived there before that time and must have been there during the elections. The brothers were later accused of hiding him there. In the chronicle of the monastery he is described as a prudent and educated man of noble descent.

In a letter from the Pope from 1264, Erlandsen was reprimanded for having chosen Arnfast, an obvious enemy of King Erik, into the episcopate. This never came into the possession of the diocese, as Pope Alexander IV had chosen another, namely Tyge. He remained abbot of the Ryde monastery, but did not live long because another abbot appeared in the documents in 1263. It was alleged that he administered poison to the king's father over several days. It was not until the 16th century that it was said that Arnfast had poisoned King Christoph with the wine at the Lord's Supper . In this form it first appeared in the Latin version of the history of Denmark by Hans Svaning (1503–1584).
