Arno Vihalemm

Arno Vihalemm (* May 11. . Jul / 24. May  1911 greg. In Pärnu , † 21st July 1990 in Vaxjo , Sweden ) was an Estonian poet and graphic artist .

Life

Arno Vihalemm was called Arnold Koch until his name was estonized in 1936 . He was born the son of a customs officer. In 1931 he graduated from the boys' grammar school in Pärnu.

Vihalemm studied from 1935 to 1940 and 1943 at the Pallas Art School in Tartu, Livonia . In Pärnu he had his own studio before the start of the Second World War . In 1944 Vihalemm fled the Soviet occupation of Estonia to Sweden . He had to leave his wife and two sons behind in Estonia.

From 1948 to 1952 Vihalemm worked as an artist in a ceramic factory in Ystad . He then settled in southern Sweden as a freelance graphic artist, painter and poet.

Arno Vihalemm is known for his six collections of poetry in Estonian , which were published in exile in Sweden and often contained (self-) ironic and grotesque verses of naive lightness, as well as for his graphic works, paintings and book illustrations.

Arno Vihalemm is the father of the Estonian philosopher Rein Vihalemm (* 1938) and the journalist Peeter Vihalemm (* 1944).
