Arno Zirpel (born September 21, 1886 in Groß-Saabor , Neumarkt district , † September 8, 1962 in Wiesbaden ) was an impressionist painter.

Life

Arno Zirpel was born on September 21, 1886 in Groß-Saabor near Breslau in Silesia as the son of the estate manager Maximilian Zirpel and his wife Olga. He spent his school days in Strehlen. He began to paint at an early age at the art school in Wroclaw, but his father did not think much of this “breadless art” and let him study law in Wroclaw and Lausanne . He spent his legal clerkship and assessor in Breslau and Brieg. In 1914 he had to enter the war , from which he did not return until 1919.

In 1923 he married the widow Ruth Schwartz, nee Vogel. The couple had daughters Ingeborg, Ursula and Brigitta. From 1930 he worked as a Prussian government councilor in Breslau, moved to Liegnitz as a government director in 1936 and was transferred to Wiesbaden in 1938. There he was in the regional council for agriculture and forestry and thus also responsible for the Hessian state baths and state wineries. He died in Wiesbaden on September 8, 1962. His grave is in the north cemetery .

painting

Arno Zirpel liked to paint scenic impressions, such as B. Landscapes with ponds and diverse water reflections, mainly from his home in Lower Silesia , but also numerous buildings, such as the town hall and the church Maria auf dem Sande in Wroclaw. From 1938 he captured striking buildings and views from Wiesbaden ( Schlossplatz , Kurhaus , Ringkirche , Wilhelmstrasse) and from the Rheingau (banks of the Rhine near Eltville ) and the light-flooded Taunus forests in his pictures. There are also numerous portraits from his time at the art school in Wroclaw, as well as from grandparents to grandchildren. Several flower pictures complete the palette. Mostly he painted in oil. Many watercolors and some charcoal drawings have also been preserved.

Some sketchbooks (e.g. from his military service in Belarus ) as well as a handwritten list of most of his paintings, which he painted after 1923, are available. From these records it can also be seen that after 1945 Arno Zirpel exhibited and sold pictures at the Dahms Gallery (Wiesbaden, Wilhelmstrasse) and the Schäfer Art Dealer (Wiesbaden, Faulbrunnenstrasse). Most of his works are still owned by family members.
