Arnold Aletrino (born April 1, 1858 in Amsterdam , † January 17, 1916 in Chernex near Montreux ) was a Dutch doctor , anthropologist and author who has published several works on homosexuality in the Dutch and French languages.

Aletrino was born to Salomon Aletrino and Selima Pineda. As a medical student, Aletrino was friends with Frederik van Eeden and Jacob Israël de Haan . Aletrino belonged to the Dutch group of the Tachtigers , a young and revolutionary current of authors. In 1892 Aletrino married Rachel Mendes da Costa, who died of suicide five years later. Aletrino later married Jupie van Stockum.

Between 1889 and 1906 Aletrino wrote several novels and a collection of stories. During this time he worked as a doctor in Amsterdam. In the last years of his life, Aletrino was seriously ill and lived with his wife in Switzerland .

Aletrino was a student of Cesare Lombroso , who attributed human crime to a degenerated central nervous system. Aletrino broke with Lombroso's views on evaluating homosexual people in an 1897 article. In that article, Aletrino wrote that homosexuality was to be viewed in a different way and that homosexual people were perfectly normal and healthy. In later works he campaigned against legal intolerance and the criminal liability of homosexuality in Europe.

In 1901 Aletrino defended homosexual people at the Fifth Congress of Criminal Anthropology in Amsterdam. He has been accused of defending immorality. He continued his efforts throughout his life. to achieve more tolerance and education on the subject of homosexuality in society. In 1912 Aletrino took part in the Dutch branch of the Scientific and Humanitarian Committee , which was founded in Germany in 1897 by LGBT activist Magnus Hirschfeld .
