Arnost Zvi Ehrman

Arnost Zvi Ehrman (* 1914 in Kráľovský Chlmec ; † 1976 ) was a lawyer and rabbi and stood out for his contribution to popularizing the Talmudic Halacha long before Steinsaltz or the Schottenstein Edition ventured into similar ventures.

Life

Ehrman attended Czechoslovak and Swiss Talmud universities . 1942 doctorate he attended the University of Bern to Dr. jur. with a thesis on Swiss constitutional law . In 1947 he was appointed rabbi by Israel Brodie at the Jews' College in London ( Semicha ). In the same year he emigrated to the British Mandate Palestine . In 1949 he was accepted as a member of the Israel Bar Association , the professional association of Israeli lawyers.

From 1949 to 1952 he conducted research at the Harry Fischel Institute , on which his work Ḥuḳat mishpaṭ (1957) is based. In 1952/53 he was assistant to Jacob J. Rabinowitz and lectured on Talmudic law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . From 1953 to 1959 Ehrman was Minister of the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation (with a break in 1957 for a stay at the Institute of Jewish Studies in Manchester ).

In 1961 he returned to Israel, where he continued his academic career.
