Penny Halsall (born November 24, 1946 , † December 31, 2011 , born Penelope Jones , known under her pseudonym Penny Jordan ), was a British best-selling author of women's novels.

She wrote over 200 love stories. Her books have been translated into a total of 25 languages ​​and have sold 100 million copies.

She began writing Regency romance novels under the name Caroline Courtney, and wrote contemporary novels under the name Penny Jordan . She also wrote historical romance novels under her mother's maiden name, Annie Groves . Other pseudonyms were Melinda Wright and Lydia Hitchcock .

Private life

Penelope Jones was born on November 24, 1946 in Preston , the fourth child of her parents. She has been an avid reader since childhood. Her favorite authors were Jane Austen , Dorothy Dunnett , Catherine Cookson , Georgette Heyer , Charles Dickens , the plays of William Shakespeare and the Bible . She worked as a shorthand typist in Manchester for over 14 years . She was married to Steve Halsall, who died in 2002. Jordan worked in a Tudor house in the small town of Nantwich in western England . She died of cancer on December 31, 2011 .

Writing career

After inventing and writing stories just for herself for the first few years, her career began when her husband bought her an old electric typewriter. In March 1979 she published her first novel as Caroline Courtney, Duchess in Disguise , in Germany as Lucinda, the Duchess in the Mask . By 1986 she published 25 Regency romances under this name, which were also published in Germany. In 1981 her first contemporary romance novel appeared in England as Penny Jordan. Since 2003 she has been writing historical novels again as Annie Groves.

Her novels were very popular in Germany. Her Caroline Courtney romance novels have been published as paperbacks by Heyne Verlag , Bastei-Lübbe Verlag and Goldmann Verlag since the 1980s . The Penny Jordan novels are published by Cora Verlag . Between 1985 and 1988 six titles by Leonora Blythe, pseudonym of Leonora Burton, ( Lady Tara , Felicia , Sally , Miranda , Caroline , Helene ) were published under the name Caroline Courtney by Heyne and Bastei Lübbe.

In 2011 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Romantic Novelists' Association .
