The ruins of Arnulfsfeste , also known as Hetzelburg , are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Moosburg in Carinthia .

History

Bronze Age finds confirm that it is an old settlement area.

The first documentary mention comes from the year 879.

In the period from 1100 to the second half of the 15th century, the Count Palatinate of Gorizia is reported as the owner; they were followed by the Habsburgs , from 1501 to 1630 the Ernauer , from 1633 the barons of Kronegg and in 1733 the Counts of Goëss .

After the new castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century, the Hetzelburg increasingly fell into disrepair.

The castle is built on three hills

To the north-west of the Moosburger Mitterteich, three hills rise with the Arnulfsfeste, popularly known as "Mosaburch".

In the north is the Rauthügel, in the southwest of the Thurnerhügel and in the southeast of the Arnulfhügel. It is a vast, partly badly dilapidated complex that is made up of three separate building complexes: on the Rauthügel the Carolingian "heribergium" as the oldest fortification , on the Thurnerhügel the actual main castle from the 12th-14th centuries . Century and on the Arnulf hill the "Arnulfturm" surrounded by Bering , the burgrave seat from the 13th century. It is a tower with a wall thickness of two meters and a square floor plan with a side length of 12 meters. On the west side, the tower has been preserved to a height of just over 12 meters. The main building consisted of the fortress house with two rooms and a south-facing courtyard, which was surrounded by the Bering. A two-meter-high masonry made of rubble stones from the 12th century represents the lowest area of the house and bering from the 13th century. It was probably not until the late Middle Ages that the complex was combined into a large fortification.

The keep was re-measured in 2002 after the renovation by the Carolingian Association: The side lengths are: N: 11.42 m, S: 11.43 m; O: 11.38 m, W: 11.39 m. The wall thickness is between 2.1 and 2.25 m. The preserved height on the west side is 12.65 m.

Access to the area is prohibited by the property owner.
