Moosburg Castle is a castle in the village of Moosburg in the state of Carinthia in Austria .

location

Moosburg Castle is located on a hill west of the town of Moosburg and east of the old Arnulfsfeste (Hetzelburg) .

history

In the 15th century, Moosburg was owned by von Graben , namely Andreas von Graben zu Sommeregg and Wolfgang Andreas von Graben . Since the beginning of the 16th century Schloss Moosburg was owned by the aristocratic family of Ernauer . The palace, built in the late Gothic style , was probably built under Georg von Ernau († 1541) and redesigned and expanded under Ulrich II von Ernau (1531–1607) and his son Hector . In 1629/30 the family, which had meanwhile become Protestant, had to leave the Duchy of Carinthia in the course of the Counter-Reformation because of their Protestant faith and in 1630 Hector von Ernau sold the Moosburg castle and lordship to the imperial councilor and landscape secretary Johann Weber von Ehrenthal . From the second quarter of the 17th century the castle belonged to the barons of Kronegg ( Cronegg ), from 1708 the Counts of Goëss were lords of the castle.

In 1994 the interior of the castle was restored; a restaurant has been located in the late Gothic hall since 1995. Currently the castle is used as a hotel, restaurant, for weddings and celebrations.

architecture

The castle is surrounded by a lining wall in the east, north and west , in the northwest and on the north side you can see the foundation walls of towers, in the northeast there is a round tower. The complex consists of two massive four-storey building cubes with a high saddle-hip roof , slightly off-axis . The western part was expanded at the beginning of the 16th century and in the fourth quarter of the 16th century, the eastern wing in the 17th century. Since the beginning of the 17th century, an eastern arcade running in a north-south direction has connected the towering castle complex with its low, two-story south wing, the former business section. The ashlar portal, an iron plate-clad gate with the coat of arms of Hector von Ernau (Schelle) and his wife, née Keutschach (Rübe), inscribed "1616" is built into the arcade tract. Above it is a marble double coat of arms Kronegg-Zinzendorff, inscribed "1688".
