The picture motif Holy Change by Claudio Coello

The holy walk (also called return from Egypt , return from the temple or the walk of the Holy Family over the mountains ) is a pictorial motif of sacred art that depicts the Holy Family walking. Already popular in the Middle Ages , this type of image found widespread use during the Counter-Reformation through multiple copperplate copies.

The motif represents scenes from the childhood of Jesus described in the apocryphal writings , in which Jesus is led by the hand by his parents. The motif of the Holy Change was spread especially in the time of the Counter Reformation by the Jesuits based on Spanish models and can be found in several churches in the area between southern Germany and northern Italy e.g. B. in Unterhaching , Reichersberg Abbey and Goricia . A special feature is the pilgrimage miraculous image of the holy walk from 1670 in St. Korbinian (Unterhaching near Munich), which depicts those of the ruling family at that time (Electress Henriette Adelheid, Prince Max Emanuel and Elector Ferdinand Maria) in the facial features of the holy family.
