Arona Diedhiou (born December 31, 1969 ) is a Senegalese climate scientist. He is research director at the Institute for Development Research at the Joseph Fourier University .

Life

Diedhiou has a scientific background in atmospheric physics , climatology and mathematics . He holds a PhD in meteorology from the University of Paris XII .

Diedhiou is married and has three children.

Act

Diedhiou's research deals with hydroclimatic variability and the environmental factors associated with extreme events in Africa ( floods , drought , wetness and drought , heat waves ).

From 2003 to 2007, Diedhiou participated as a member of the International Executive Committee in the coordination and development of the international program African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyzes (AMMA). He also contributed to the involvement of African scientists, regional centers and national weather services. Thanks to its international coordination, AMMA created an interdisciplinary database that is used worldwide and also reflects Africa. Between 2007 and 2012 he headed the RIPIECSA program, which was funded by France with three and a half million euros for the benefit of projects to study the climate, the environment and social interactions in West and Central Africa. Arona Diedhiou was a member of the independent scientific advisory board of the CGIAR Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security research program . He was also a member of the scientific committee of the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use Program (WASCAL), which was established by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research .

Diedhiou is one of the authors of the IPCC's Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 Degrees (2018).

From 2015 to 2019 Arona Diedhiou was a member of the WDS Scientific Committee (WDS-SC). During this time, he almost single-handedly organized the WDS congress Data Initiatives in Africa - Opportunities and Challenges for Research and Sustainable Development , which took place in Grenoble from April 12 to 13, 2017. He resigned from the committee for health reasons.
