Arpachschad

Arpachschad (also Arpaksad ; Hebrew אַרְפַּכְשַׁד; According to the Book of Genesis of the Bible, "healer" was the son of Shem and the grandson of Noah (cf. Genesis 10.22.24  EU , 11.10-13 EU ; 1 Chr 1.17-18  EU ).

Arpachschad is said to have been born two years after the flood , when his father was just 100 years old. His brothers were Elam (forefather of the Elamites ), Aschur , Lud and Aram , his son was called Schelach (sometimes also Salah). He is an ancestor of Abraham and was seen by Josephus and others as the ancestor of the Chaldeans .

The name is said to have survived in the province of Arrapachitis in northern Assyria . According to Soggin, however, it is supposed to be a non-Semitic word derived from the Ugaritic arraphana .
