Assyria (Bible)
Assur is the second eldest son of Shem and grandson of Noah in the Old Testament .
etymology
The Hebrew name אַשּׁוּר 'aššûr , German ' Assur ' is originally not a personal name, but describes the city of Aššur , its city god Aššur , the land of Assyria and the Assyrian people. The Septuagint gives the name as ασσουρ assūr , the Vulgate as Assur , the Samaritan Pentateuch as ' Āšor .
Biblical narration
Assyria is mentioned in Gen 10 in the Table of Nations . His brothers are called Elam , Arpachschad , Lud and Aram . The section of the Table of Nations Gen 10: 22-23 EU in which Assyria and his brothers are mentioned belongs to the priestly scriptures. He and his brothers are also mentioned in 1 Chr 1,17 EU .
