Exterior

The height of the Aravani is between 125 and 147 cm. It has a small, finely-cut head with large eyes and curved ears. The high, strong neck has a lush, sometimes curly mane. The flat withers is followed by a straight, short back, a deep tail and a thick tail. It stands on very hard, small and steep hooves, which pass into equally steep and dry pasterns. The position of the hind legs is cowhocked . The Aravani appears as black, fox, bay and gray, never as a piebald. White badges are rare.

interior

The Arravani is considered robust and undemanding. Due to his calm, people-related nature paired with high endurance and surefootedness, he is well suited for hiking and distance rides. They are also used for western riding, English riding and gaited horse riding in Tölt and Pass . They are used as draft horses in front of small carriages.

Breeding history

The mountain ponies were influenced in the course of history by the Egyptian Arabs , Medes, Greek Thessalians, Roman horses and Turkish Arabs.

Tölting horses were in great demand in ancient Greece because of their ease of riding. In the past millennia they were the all-purpose horses of the farmers. This included plowing the fields, transporting loads over stony mountain paths as well as working as a riding and carriage pony. With the advent of motorized vehicles, they gradually became superfluous. They were sold to Italy as meat suppliers.

There is no stud book yet, so this regional breed is somewhat inhomogeneous. In addition to the tölt , they also have the passport . About a third of the current population of 200-300 animals in Greece are three-legged. The breed is threatened with extinction. In the meantime, the Greek state is promoting their receipt. In Germany the interest group Arravani eV tries to breed arravanis the size of a riding pony.
