The Arrenuridae are a family of the freshwater mites ( Hydrachnidiae) within the mites (Acari).
features
The back and stomach of the animals are armored. Their palpinal phalanges are pincer-shaped and in both sexes the genital cups sit on plates. The species of the family usually have a well-developed sexual dimorphism , whereby the males are often clearly differentiated from the females by various attachments at the end of the body. Due to this special formation of the end of the body, their representatives are the most noticeable among the water mites.
distribution
The Arrenuridae are represented worldwide with the genus Arrenurus , of which around 150 species are known from Europe, which live mainly in still waters .
Way of life
Many Arrenurus species go through a parasitic phase in the larval stage and parasitize on various dragonflies and Diptera species. As swimming mites, they inhabit stagnant and slowly flowing waters and are mainly located near the aquatic plants, as the small animal life required for hunting is particularly rich there.
Many species live in Phytotelmata , which are tiny bodies of water, for example in bromeliad funnels .
