ArtX was founded in 1997 by a group of engineers from Silicon Graphics who developed the graphics chip for the Nintendo 64 . Co-founder was Dr. Like Yen , former top developer at Silicon Graphics. David Orton , who also headed the Advanced Graphics Division of Silicon Graphics, became president of the company .

ArtX wanted to develop 3D graphics chips for the PC sector that would be both powerful and inexpensive and they hoped to immediately compete with the then market leaders 3dfx and nVidia . At COMDEX in autumn 1999, together with Acer Labs , they demonstrated the first IGP with T&L unit, the ALi Aladdin 7 . In addition, they were selected by Nintendo to supply the GameCube's graphics chip , called Flipper .

In February 2000, ArtX was acquired by ATI Technologies for US $ 400 million and fully integrated into the company.
