Kochhofsiedlung today

The Kochhofsiedlung in the Stuttgart district of Killesberg is a model housing estate built in 1933 under the direction of the architect Paul Schmitthenner by representatives of the Stuttgart school using wood construction. The declared aim was to create a consciously traditionalist counter-model to the nearby Weißenhofsiedlung , built in 1927 .

history

The name Küchehof comes from a farm of the same name that has existed in the district since the 1770s. According to initial planning in 1927/28, the total of 25 individual houses in the settlement were built in 1933 with the participation of the German forestry industry as part of the building exhibition "German wood for house construction and apartments". The 23 architectural offices and individual architects involved, including Paul Schmitthenner and Paul Bonatz , were mostly former students or professors from the Technical University of Stuttgart . The members of this group were known as the " Stuttgart School ". The architects had to follow certain guidelines during construction, those of Schmitthenner and the Stuttgart city planner Heinz Wetzel were given.

One of the building requirements was that all buildings had a gable roof and had to be constructed using wood . The latter should help to show the durability and profitability of wooden buildings and thereby promote wood processing in the construction industry. Opponents of this traditionalist construction method jokingly referred to the Kochhofsiedlung as a “woodworm settlement”. This nickname is still in use today - until recently an inn at the settlement was called “Zum Holzwurm”.

During the Second World War , parts of the settlement were destroyed in air raids. After the war, the residential area was expanded with conventional buildings, for which the building guidelines of the Kochhofsiedlung no longer applied. Numerous structural changes were also made in the actual settlement.
