The Killesberg is the highest foothill of the Feuerbacher Heide . The district of Stuttgart named after him belongs to the Stuttgart-Nord district . It is located north of the center of Stuttgart on the border with the Feuerbach district .

history

There is no definite origin of the name of the Killesberg. It is assumed, however, that the term derives from Külle ( Celtic : mountain nose, hilltop). Drawings from 1820 show the Killes mountain as totally undeveloped hills, was operated on the wine. From November 27, 1941, the first trains departed from Killesberg, in which Jewish people from Württemberg were brought to Riga . Today the district is best known for the Killesberg Park located there . On the site of the former exhibition center , an extension of the Höhenpark, a new district center and hundreds of new apartments at the Höhenpark were built from 2009.

geography

The summit of the Killesberg is 383  m above sea level. NHN high mountain top on the western edge of the Höhenpark, on which the German Red Cross operates a retirement home.

In the vernacular, the term Killesberg is often referred to the neighboring district of Am Bismarck Tower to the southwest with the 409.5  m above sea level. NHN high Gähkopf, on which the Bismarck Tower is located, and is synonymous with the upscale residential area of the entire area.

The famous Weißenhofsiedlung from 1927 is to the east of the new building area at the Höhenpark and to the west of it is the Kochhofsiedlung from 1933.

To the south on the Killesberg are the sports clubs TC Weißenhof and Sportverein Prag Stuttgart 1899 e. V. is at home.

Residential area

The residential area of Killesberg and the neighboring districts has been one of the most expensive addresses in Stuttgart since the 1920s. Numerous villas and detached houses with large gardens , many with a view of the city center, are typical of the district to the south-west. The German Red Cross operates a retirement home on the elevation of the actual Killesberg .

After an exhibition opened for the garden show in 1950 , the so-called Killesbergsiedlung was handed over to the buyers of the houses and thus “inaugurated”. The settlement is partly located on the former site of the 1939 Reichsgartenschau and was created by the architect Helmut Erdle, who is experienced in settlement construction .

The first Federal President of the Federal Republic, Theodor Heuss, lived from 1959 to 1963 in the building at Feuerbacher Weg 46 in the neighboring district of Am Bismarck Tower to the southwest . The Theodor-Heuss-Haus is now a visitor attraction. It houses an exhibition on Heuss' life and work and German history from the German Empire to the 1960s.

After the new fair was completed in October 2007 , the dismantling of the old fair on the Killesberg began, which was completed in December 2009. In addition, the Rote Wand multi-storey car park was demolished in autumn 2008, which freed up additional space south of the Höhenpark . To reuse the area around the old trade fair, the city of Stuttgart organized the urban development competition Zukunft Killesberg . The area of the old exhibition halls was divided into several zones.

A total of around 450 apartments were built on the Killesberg. The city expected revenues of around 50 million euros from the sale of the plots considered valuable. One of the new development areas is located east of the Green Fugue, one is being built near the Rote Wand, and another is part of the Killesberghöhe .

The Killesberghöhe is an urban development project, as a result of which the district center with trade and services Forum K , as well as numerous apartments were built on the Höhenpark. The main building, Forum K , opened at the end of November 2012, and the owner-occupied and rental apartments on Killesberghöhe were occupied in mid-2013. The total costs for the new quarter amounted to 160 million euros.

The city of Stuttgart invested a total of 21 million euros in the new infrastructure on Killesberg, including the demolition of the trade fair and road construction. More than half of this went into the construction of the outdoor facilities (10.4 million euros). The pure construction costs for the park (Grüne Fuge, Rote Wand, Feuerbacher Heide) amounted to 7.65 million euros. The ten-hectare park area of the Green Fugue was opened in May 2012 and extended in addition to the amount Park and The Green U .

The original plan for a fashion and order center called Scenario was not implemented because the project developer was unable to rent out 60 percent of the center, as specified in the contract terms. In 2014, the city of Stuttgart launched the restricted red wall planning competition for residential development in Killesberg, Stuttgart-Nord 2014 , in which draft proposals are drawn up to convert the approximately 1-hectare area into residential use. The area is to be integrated into the overall structures of the urban area as a district with an independent character. The start of construction on the Rote Wand residential area was postponed from 2015 to the beginning of 2019 because the property was temporarily used as accommodation for 294 refugees during the 2015 refugee crisis. A total of up to 118 residential units are to be built in the Rote Wand residential area.

On the site of the former exhibition halls 11 to 14, Augustinum gGmbH now operates a retirement home , the Augustinum Stuttgart Killesberg . The total construction costs for this project, including land acquisition, were around € 70 million.

The Höhenpark Killesberg was connected to the Feuerbacher Heide by a bridge , completing the eight kilometer long park landscape of the “Green U” between the city center and Killesberg. The light rail line to Killesberg remained, the station now bears the name Killesberg (without the addition of the fair ). Until the timetable change in September 2013, the U5 and U12 tram lines ran to the Killesberg, from now on only the U5 runs on the Killesberg, every 20 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes during the off-peak hours. As an alternative, the newly introduced U17, at events, condenses the U5 to a 10-minute cycle.

Media reception

The most successful crime scene of all time in terms of audience numbers, crime scene: red - red - dead , takes place on the Killesberg.

In 1997 the artist Thomas D released the song Killesberg Baby . The artist tells from a first-person perspective in a humorous way of a love affair between him and a woman from Killesberg who comes from a wealthy background. The narrator, on the other hand, comes from Heslach ("Killesberg Baby - I'm from Heslach") and the relationship ultimately fails due to the social differences between the two participants. The song appeared on the album Solo , which reached number 20 in the charts.
