Artec 3D  is a developer and manufacturer of hardware and software for 3D scanning . The international group of companies has its headquarters in  Luxembourg , and branches in the USA ( Santa Clara ) and Russia ( Moscow ). Artec 3D products and services are used in a variety of industries including engineering, healthcare, media and design, and entertainment. In 2013 Artec 3D started an automated system for full-body scans, Shapify.me, with which 3D portraits, so-called “selfies”, can be created.

technology

3D scanners  capture the  geometry of  an object and create a three-dimensional digital model . Artec's 3D scanners are structural light scanners. They project light in a certain pattern, usually in the form of several parallel rays, onto an object. When you project a grid pattern onto an object, the scanners can detect deformation and distortion from multiple angles and then use triangulation to calculate the distance to specific points on the object . The three-dimensional coordinates obtained in this way are used to digitally reconstruct the real object. Light scanners can use either blue or white light, with Artec scanners being equipped with the latter. However, the choice of light has no influence on the processes and concepts on which the technology is based.

hardware

Eve

Eva is a hand-held 3D color scanner that was released in 2012 and can capture and process up to two million points per second. The scanner is designed to capture medium to large objects. The device has a scanning area of 214 × 148 mm at the minimum distance and 536 × 371 mm at the maximum distance, a 3D resolution of up to 0.5 mm and a 3D point accuracy of 0.1 mm. Eva can work at distances between 0.4 m and 1 m from the object and captures up to 16 frames per second. Data can be exported in the file formats OBJ, PLY, WRL, STL, AOP, ASCII, PTX, E57 or XYZRGB. Eva does not need any warm-up time and can be used immediately after switching on.

Spider

Spider is a hand-held 3D color scanner released in 2013 designed to capture smaller, complex objects with high resolution and accuracy. The device has a 3D resolution of 0.1 mm and a point accuracy of up to 0.05 mm. Spider does not require any markings or manual adjustments during post-processing. It takes 30 minutes to warm up to deliver maximum accuracy. The finished scans can be exported to a number of file formats, including OBJ and STL.

Space spider

Space Spider is a hand-held 3D color scanner released in 2015. Space Spider uses a blue LED light source and has a 3D resolution of up to 0.1 mm and an accuracy of 0.05 mm. It works at distances between 170 mm and 350 mm from an object. Originally developed for use on the International Space Station  , the device includes an advanced temperature control system designed to prevent overheating - a common problem with space technology. The scanner takes three minutes to warm up to achieve maximum accuracy and can maintain this accuracy even after several hours of continuous use.

Ray

Ray is a portable 3D laser scanner that has been developed to capture large objects and surfaces in great detail from a distance of up to 110 meters. Ray, which was launched in 2018, produces scans with sub-millimeter accuracy (up to 0.7 mm) and minimal noise, which enables significantly reduced post-processing times. Artec Ray is suitable for reverse engineering and inspection applications as well as for indoor and outdoor monument preservation. This compact LIDAR solution (under 5 kg) is mobile, whereby the internal battery enables the user to scan for up to 4 hours on site. The coloring is done by two fully integrated 5-megapixel cameras. The scans are processed directly in the Artec Studio software. Studio offers a full range of post-processing tools. Scans can also be exported to Geomagic Design X for additional processing options. With the Artec Remote App (WiFi) it is also possible to control Ray remotely via an iPhone or iPad. Remote allows the user to create previews, select one or more scan areas, scan and save the data directly to an SD card, or change scan settings and check battery and scanner status.

Shapify Booth

Shapify Booth is an automatic full-body 3D scanning booth presented in 2014, consisting of four Artec hand-held scanners and a fixed platform. The 3D scanners rotate 360 degrees around a person and capture 700 surfaces in 12 seconds. The captured data is then transformed into a flawless, full-color, 3D printable model in around 5 minutes. Shapify Booth can be bought or leased from companies worldwide.

Broadway 3D

Broadway is the biometric facial recognition system developed by Artec under the Artec ID brand. The device is equipped with a 3D-capable visual system and differentiates between complex geometries to a fraction of a millimeter. It takes less than a second for face recognition and two seconds for registration. Broadway 3D works at a distance of 0.8 to 1.6 m and can recognize up to 60 people per minute. The technology was used at Sochi International Airport to increase security during the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Leo

Leo is an ergonomic, portable 3D color scanner with automatic processing "on board" that was launched in 2018. Leo has a touchscreen panel that allows users to watch a 3D replica of the scanned object come to life in real time. By rotating and zooming the model, the user can see directly whether areas have been overlooked, so that an object can be captured in just one scan. Leo is a professional high-speed scanner with a working distance of 0.35 - 1.2 m, designed for capturing small parts up to large areas such as crime scenes and heavy machinery. It has an angled field of view of 38.5 × 23 ° and a volume detection zone of 160,000 cm³. The speed of data acquisition is up to 3 million points / second. No targets are required, and Löwe can work effectively in daylight or in complete darkness and everything in between. Leo is completely mobile and wireless, no cables are required. SSD memory cards allow unlimited recording capacities. Based on the NVIDIA ® Jetson ™ platform, with TX1 quad-core ARM® Cortex-A57 MPCore CPU, NVIDIA Maxwell ™ 1 TFLOPS GPU with 256 NVIDIA® CUDA®; a built-in 9 DoF inertial system, with accelerometer, gyroscope and compass so that Leo always understands his physical position and surroundings.

Micro

Micro is an automated desktop 3D scanner designed for creating digital reproductions of very small objects and has been on the market since 2019. Micro's two far cameras are synchronized with its two-axis rotation system to scan objects up to 90 mm × 60 mm × 60 mm in size. By using blue light technology, Micro has a 3D accuracy of up to 10 micrometers and exports to common file formats such as STL, OBJ and PTX. In preparation for scanning, the objects are simply mounted on the Micro scanning platform. Then the user selects from a number of predefined scan paths or sets his own paths and the scanning process can begin. Micro is a popular choice for quality inspection and reverse engineering of very small objects, and can also be used in dentistry, jewelry making, and more.

software

Artec Studio

Artec Studio is software for 3D scanning and post-processing. Data is recorded and divided into several "scans", which are then processed and combined to form a 3D model. Studio includes a fully automated post-processing mode called “Autopilot” - it guides the user through a few questions about the properties of the scanned object and offers the option of assisting throughout the post-processing process. The autopilot mode automatically merges the scans within a higher-level coordinate system, selects the algorithms for post-processing, cleans up recorded data and removes subsurface surfaces. After completion, scan data can be  exported directly to 3D Systems Geomagic Design X and SOLIDWORKS for further CAD processing  .

Artec ScanApp

Artec ScanApp is a  Mac OS X application (with support for El Capitan & Yosemite) to scan with an Artec Eva 3D scanner. Data collected with ScanApp can be processed within the software or exported to a Windows PC for further processing with Artec Studio.

Artec Scanning SDK

Artec Scanning SDK is a software development kit (SDK) that allows individuals or companies to modify existing software or develop new software to work with Artec's handheld scanners.
